Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Go

Whitewater trips navigate Class III rapids for maximum excitement and adrenaline. Both offer genuine paddling adventure - scenic trips simply prioritize natural beauty and skill-building over big waves. If you want thrills, book whitewater. If you want serenity with gentle adventure, book scenic

Children as young as 8 can typically participate, depending on size, maturity, and current water conditions. Older adventurers also find these trips more comfortable and accessible. Contact us to discuss your specific group's ages and abilities - we'll help you choose the perfect option. Great for multigenerational family adventures!

Absolutely not! Our scenic trips are perfect for first-time paddlers. The inflatable kayaks are very stable, the water is calmer than our whitewater sections, and your guide will teach you everything you need to know before launching. Most people are comfortable within the first 15 minutes on the water

Scenic trips are generally less demanding than whitewater trips, but you will be actively paddling for 1.5-2.5 hours (half-day) or 4-6 hours (full-day) with breaks. A basic level of fitness is helpful, but the customizable pace means we can adapt to your group's needs and stamina. If you can walk comfortably for 30-60 minutes and have reasonable upper body mobility, you'll likely do great. Tandem kayaks also allow stronger paddlers to do more of the work if needed

Yes! This is where scenic trips really shine. The calmer water and flexible pacing make these trips accessible for both young children (8+ on most sections) and older adults who might find whitewater too intense. Children paddle tandem with adults in our stable inflatable kayaks, and we can adjust our route and pace to ensure everyone feels comfortable and has fun. Many multigenerational families choose scenic trips for exactly this reaso

Common sightings include bald eagles, ospreys, great blue herons, white pelicans, beavers, river otters, mule deer, and various waterfowl. Moose sightings are possible, especially on early morning trips. The Snake and Hoback Rivers flow through rich riparian habitat, and the quieter nature of scenic sections increases wildlife encounter opportunities. Your guide will help you spot and identify wildlife while respecting their space and natural behaviors

Our tandem kayaks are perfect for this situation. The more confident or stronger paddler sits in the back (stern position) and provides most of the power and steering, while the front paddler can contribute as much or as little as they're comfortable with. We can also adjust our route selection to ensure less confident paddlers never feel overwhelmed. This is the beauty of private trips - everything bends to your group's needs

Absolutely! Scenic trips are ideal for photography because you're not constantly navigating big rapids. Bring a waterproof phone case or camera (we have waterproof bags available). The slower pace means you won't miss that perfect shot of an eagle taking flight or the mountains in the distance. Your guide may also take photos of your group paddling and can help you capture memories

We paddle rain or shine! You will be provided with appropriate gear for the day - wetsuit, dry suit, splash jacket or pants. Rainy days are great days on the river

Yes! Full-day trips include a riverside lunch with fresh, delicious options. When you book, let us know about dietary restrictions, allergies, preferences, or special requests. We accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and most other dietary needs with advance notice. Our riverside meals are a highlight - imagine eating fresh, tasty food with the Snake River flowing by and the mountains in view

Private trips offer more flexibility than group trips, but we still recommend booking as far in advance as possible, especially for peak summer months (July-August) and for larger groups. However, we often can accommodate last-minute requests if guides are available. Don't hesitate to reach out even if your trip is soon - we'll do everything we can to get you on the water

We want to help get you on the water! If you don't see availability for what you want or you're trying to make a last-minute reservation, we may still be able to accommodate you. Private trips offer more scheduling flexibility than group departures. Please reach out to us at info@jacksonholekayak.com, call (307) 733-2471, or swing by our shop at 945 W. Broadway Ave. We'll work with you to find a solution and create the perfect private adventure for your group
