Staged against the backdrop of one of North America’s wildest and most remote areas, is the story and history of the Box Canyon of the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River and the desperate battle to protect it. Steeped in the lore of Chief Joseph’s escape from pursuing cavalry, the place was believed to be impassible. Adventurous kayakers began exploring the depths of the canyon just as a massive dam development project began to unfold, threatening the very existence of this pristine national treasure. Unlikely alliances, the intertwining of different lives, and the work of one tireless man served to stem the tide of destruction. But, as Yvon Chouinard points out, “I’ve seen a lot of destruction in my day, and not a lot of successes.” Sometimes the battle to protect an area is its own reward
