Master River SUP — From Flatwater to Surfing Waves on the Snake River

Experience SUP evolved.

Our river trips teach you to read current, carve eddies, ferry across channels, and surf waves on the scenic Snake River. It's kayaking with a twist of surfing, and it's one of the most engaging ways to experience moving water.

Whether you're learning river SUP for the first time or progressing from flatwater, our instructors guide you through a systematic progression. Start with fundamentals on flatwater, then progress downstream through Class I–II rapids, learning to peel in and out of eddies and ultimately surf river features. Choose a half-day (4.5 hours) for focused skill-building, or a full-day (8 hours, includes lunch) for extended practice and exploration.

Your River SUP Progression

Foundation on Flat Water -

Begin on a flatwater section mastering balance positions (lying, kneeling, standing) and basic paddle strokes without fighting current.

Reading Current -

Learn board tilts to carve in and out of currents. Understand eddies, eddy lines, and river features you can play on.

River Safety -

Comprehensive safety talk covering self-rescue, river language, and hazard recognition.

Eddy Skills -

Practice peeling in and out of eddies-first on your knees, then standing. Master the fundamental skill that lets you navigate rivers.

Ferrying -

Learn to angle your board to move laterally across current. This leads to...

Surfing Waves -

The payoff! Position yourself on waves and carve back and forth while the river flows beneath you. You don't need huge waves-every eddy, wave, and riffle becomes entertainment.

Downstream Adventure -

Practice all skills through 1-9+ miles of Class I-II rapids on the scenic Snake River with expert coaching throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Go

Yes! We start with fundamentals on land and then in a calm or slow moving eddy. Our progression gets beginners navigating eddies, paddling through waves and maybe even surfing!

Very different! River SUP adds reading current, catching eddies, ferrying, and surfing waves. Skills transfer but excitement levels up dramatically.

Probably, especially when learning eddy turns - but that's part of the fun! The Snake is deep and forgiving. We provide wetsuits/drysuits, and self-rescue is part of what we teach

More than lake SUP, usually less than whitewater kayaking. You'll actively paddle and balance on moving water. Basic fitness helps, but it's adaptable to your energy level and provides a great core workout

You can learn many skills on your knees first, which is more stable. Standing comes naturally as confidence grows - no pressure or timeline

Yes! Kids are very stable on our boards and can learn quickly. Kids need to be 8 years old, good swimmers and comfortable around the water. Younger kids can sometimes be accommodated on a tandem board when water levels permit.

Completely different! Scenic floats are passive sightseeing. River SUP is active learning - reading water, catching eddies, surfing waves. For people who want to interact with the river, not just ride along

Extended river time, delicious riverside lunch, all equipment, and transportation. More miles, more skills, deeper progression, and more scenic Snake River sections

Premium SUP boards (Starboard, Boardworks, NRS, HALA, SOL), quality paddles (Werner and others), PFDs, and wetsuits/drysuits depending on season. All the best equipment included

Absolutely! Your river reading skills transfer directly. River SUP offers fresh perspective and new physical challenges. Many kayakers find it reinvigorates their love of rivers
