Slide Lake Day Trip

Learn to Paddle a Touring Kayak on Jackson Hole's Hidden Alpine Gem

Slide Lake offers the perfect venue for learning kayaking fundamentals—stunning mountain scenery, manageable conditions, and fascinating natural history. Formed in 1925 by the cataclysmic collapse of Sheep Mountain's north slope, this unique lake in the Gros Ventre Mountains provides an ideal classroom for beginning recreational or touring kayakers.

Your instructor will teach you proper stroke technique, kayaking safety, and boat handling skills that soon have you gliding confidently across the water in your new craft.

With views of the surrounding forest, the red rock of the Gros Ventre Range, and distant peaks of the Grand Tetons, you'll learn in one of Jackson Hole's most beautiful and less crowded alpine settings.

The slide path and debris from the 1925 event remain clearly visible as you travel up the Gros Ventre River to the lake, creating a living geology lesson. Add abundant wildlife including beaver lodges, osprey nests, bald eagles, and possibly moose, and you have an unforgettable introduction to paddle sports.
