Your Lake SUP Experience

Instruction & Balance Progression

Your adventure begins at our shop in Jackson, where you'll meet your instructor before we transport you to beautiful Slide Lake. Once there, we start on land with the foundations of stand up paddleboarding.

Land-Based Learning - Before stepping on the water, your instructor will explain SUP board and paddle design, teach you proper paddle grip and how to hold your paddle efficiently, and demonstrate the different board paddling positions you'll progress through.

Water-Based Balance Progression - Once on the lake, we take a methodical approach to building your confidence and skill. We start with kneeling, to get comfortable with the board's movement and stability, where you'll learn paddle strokes and maneuvering techniques. Finally, when you're ready, you'll stand up and discover why SUP is the fastest-growing paddlesport in the world.

Within each position, you'll learn different paddling techniques and strokes to help you maneuver your board efficiently and effectively. Our instructors are patient, encouraging, and expert at helping people progress at their own pace.

Exploring the Lake

Sunken Forests & Wildlife

Once you've mastered the basics and are comfortable on your board, it's time to put your newly learned skills to the test with a paddle through Slide Lake's remarkable features.

The Sunken Forests - Glide through the ghostly remains of trees that once stood tall above the valley floor, now preserved beneath the water's surface. This eerie, beautiful landscape provides dramatic photo opportunities and a tangible connection to the area's dramatic geological event.

Wildlife Viewing - Approach beaver lodges quietly and watch for the architects themselves. Scan the tall trees for osprey nests and bald eagle nests-you'll often see these magnificent raptors fishing or tending their young. Great blue herons, ducks, and other waterfowl are common, and moose sometimes feed along the shoreline.

Natural History Interpretation - Your guide will share the fascinating story of the Gros Ventre Slide, explain the ecology of the lake and surrounding wetlands, and help you understand how this unique environment continues to evolve. You're not just paddling-you're learning about one of Wyoming's most interesting geological and ecological stories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Go

Absolutely! Slide Lake's manageable conditions and our systematic instruction approach make it ideal for first-timers. We start with balance progressions on your knees before you ever try standing. Most people are standing and paddling successfully quickly. Our instructors are experts at teaching beginners

It's different rather than harder. SUP requires more balance initially, but the standing position gives you great visibility and a unique connection to the water. Our balance progression method builds confidence systematically, and the stable boards we use are very forgiving. Many people find SUP more intuitive than kayaking once they get their "sea legs."

Falling is part of learning - and part of the fun! Slide Lake is relatively shallow in most areas and warm in summer months. We provide wetsuits or drysuits depending on the season to keep you comfortable. Getting back on your board is part of what we teach, and most people laugh it off and try again. Some people never fall; others embrace it as part of the adventure

SUP provides a great full-body workout but doesn't require extreme fitness. You'll engage your core for balance and use your arms and back for paddling. The beauty of SUP is that you can paddle gently and enjoy the scenery, or power hard for more exercise - it scales to your fitness level and energy. Most people find it less tiring than they expect because it's so enjoyable

Yes! We welcome families with kids. Younger or smaller children can paddle tandem on larger boards with adults, while older kids and teens often do great on their own boards. The manageable conditions and gradual instruction approach make Slide Lake perfect for introducing kids to SUP. Contact us to discuss your family's specific ages and abilities

For SUP on Slide Lake, we recommend mornings. There is usually glassy conditions or a gentle breeze blowing out of the Gros Ventre Mountains. The wind generally picks up around noon and helps push us back across the lake. Having some wind and waves is great for learning to paddle in all conditions

Yes! While we design trips for all levels, experienced paddlers love Slide Lake for its unique features and wildlife viewing. We can focus less on basic instruction and more on exploring, photography, natural history interpretation, or refining advanced techniques. The sunken forests and wildlife make this lake special regardless of your skill level

Commonly: beavers (and their impressive lodges), osprey, bald eagles, great blue herons, various ducks and waterfowl, and possibly moose feeding along the shoreline. Less common but possible: otters, and numerous songbirds. The quiet approach of a paddleboard allows close wildlife encounters that would be difficult in a motorized craft

That depends on your group's interests, abilities, and how long you want to spend exploring versus learning. The lake is approximately 2.5 miles long, and we typically cover 3-5 miles total as we explore different areas, practice skills, and investigate wildlife hotspots. The pace is relaxed with plenty of time to stop, observe, and enjoy

We want to help get you on the water! If you don't see availability for what you want or you're trying to make a last-minute reservation, we may still be able to accommodate you. Our lake SUP trips are completely custom and private, offering maximum flexibility. Please reach out to us at info@jacksonholekayak.com, call (307) 733-2471, or swing by our shop at 945 W. Broadway Ave. We'll work with you to create the perfect Slide Lake adventure
