Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Go

No previous kayaking experience is required for any of our overnight trips. Our guides provide comprehensive instruction before and during the trip, and most participants are paddling comfortably within the first hour. The most important qualities are a positive attitude, reasonable fitness for 4–6 hours of daily paddling, and comfort with wilderness camping. We’ll assess your group honestly and recommend the best itinerary for you.

July and August offer warmest water and most stable weather. It’s peak season for good reason. However, these months are also busiest. Early season (June) and shoulder season (September) provide more solitude with excellent conditions, though water is colder and weather more variable. Book early for summer dates.

Active but accessible to reasonably fit adults. Expect 4–6 hours of paddling per day broken into morning and afternoon sessions with midday breaks. Daily distances range from 3–10 miles depending on itinerary and trip length. You don’t need to be an athlete, but basic cardiovascular fitness and upper body strength make the experience more enjoyable. Guides set a comfortable pace and adjust daily mileage if needed.

Outstanding! We have full backcountry kitchens and our support boat allows us to bring fresh ingredients. You will enjoy backcountry gourmet at its best and please don’t hesitate to ask us to accommodate any dietary restrictions or let us know if there are special foods you like.

Yes! Our Grand Teton overnight trips are fantastic for families — we’ve taken kids as young as five who had a great time. Younger children ride tandem with a guide or parent, and our guides adjust pacing for the group. The combination of paddling, camping, wildlife watching, and exploring together creates powerful family memories. Private family expeditions can be customized to your specific needs and comfort level.
