This is rigorous, demanding training for serious paddlers committed to professional excellence.
ACA Level 4 Whitewater Kayak Instructor Certification
This course combines two essential components of ACA instructor certification: the Instructor Development Workshop (IDW) and Instructor Certification Exam (ICE). Rather than taking these separately, you’ll experience both within a single intensive 5-day program, learning the skills and immediately demonstrating your proficiency.
Instructor Development Workshop (IDW)
Presents the skills and knowledge required to become an ACA-certified instructor. You’ll learn teaching progression, demonstration techniques, student assessment methods, risk management, and how to design effective lessons. This isn’t about your personal paddling. It’s about teaching paddling to others.
Instructor Certification Exam (ICE)
Provides the opportunity to demonstrate your proficiency in presentation (logical progression) and demonstration (proper modeling) of kayaking skills and knowledge. Each candidate must show competency in technical knowledge, paddling skills, teaching ability, safety awareness, and interpersonal skills necessary for certification.
Unique Multi-Level Certification Approach:
Unlike pass/fail courses, the ACA Level 4 course allows candidates to be examined and certified at any level (Level 1 through Level 4) based on demonstrated competency. You’re assessed at the highest level you can successfully demonstrate. It’s a realistic evaluation that matches certification to actual ability.

Frequently Asked Questions
Before You GoYou should be a competent paddler comfortable in Class II–III whitewater, with solid fundamental skills and a reliable roll (for Level 3–4 certification). However, you don’t need to be perfect. Part of the course involves refining your technique. If you’re uncertain about your readiness, contact us for a skills assessment.
That’s expected! Most participants have little or no formal teaching experience. The IDW component specifically develops teaching skills from the ground up. Your willingness to learn teaching methodology matters more than previous instructional experience.
Teaching is harder than most paddlers anticipate. You must demonstrate flawless technique while simultaneously explaining concepts, watching students, managing safety, and providing feedback. It’s a complex multitasking challenge. Additionally, video analysis often reveals technical flaws paddlers didn’t know they had. Level 4 represents genuine expert-level instruction requiring mastery of both paddling and teaching.
Absolutely! The course certifies you at the level you successfully demonstrate: Level 1, 2, 3, or 4. Many instructors begin at Level 2 or 3, gain teaching experience, refine their skills, and return for Level 4 assessment. Incremental progression is completely normal and respected.
IDW (Instructor Development Workshop) is the learning phase. You’re taught how to instruct. ICE (Instructor Certification Exam) is the assessment phase. You demonstrate your teaching ability. This course combines both rather than requiring separate attendance.
For candidates who previously attended an IDW but didn’t achieve desired certification, or whose certification needs renewal, the 2-day update provides focused reassessment and additional coaching on specific competencies without repeating the full 5-day curriculum.
Very. Five full days of intensive paddling, teaching demonstrations, and rescue practice. You’ll be on the water extensively, performing skills repeatedly, and teaching while paddling. Good fitness and solid paddling endurance are essential.
You should have your own properly-fitted PFD, helmet, paddling clothes, and personal gear. Boats and paddles can potentially be provided. Discuss equipment needs during registration. Professional instructors should eventually own their complete gear setup.
You’ll receive ACA certification credentials recognized throughout the paddlesports industry. Many graduates work professionally as camp instructors, guide school teachers, outdoor educators, or independent instructors. Certification opens doors but doesn’t guarantee employment. You’ll need to market your services or apply to organizations.
ACA certification requires periodic renewal (currently every 4 years) demonstrating you’ve remained active in instruction and continued professional development. Renewal typically involves update training and reassessment.
Technically yes. You’re certified. Practically, most new instructors benefit from mentorship and gradual responsibility increases. Consider starting with assistant teaching, co-instructing with experienced instructors, or teaching beginner-level courses before tackling advanced instruction independently.
Contact us! We can recommend preparatory skills sessions, suggest rolling clinics, or provide honest assessment of your readiness. We’d rather help you prepare adequately than have you struggle during the course.
