Frequently Asked Questions
Before You GoThis varies tremendously by individual. Most people develop working rolls within 4–8 hours of quality instruction, though reliability requires continued practice. Some natural athletes get it in single sessions; others need more time. The key is proper technique from the start. Bad habits delay learning far more than lack of athleticism.
Rolling relies more on technique than strength or flexibility. While extreme inflexibility can complicate certain roll types, most people have sufficient range of motion. Strength helps but isn’t primary. Proper technique trumps power. We’ve successfully taught rolling to people of all ages, sizes, and fitness levels.
There’s no single answer. Many people paddle Class II rivers successfully for years without rolling, using wet exit and self-rescue. However, rolling dramatically improves confidence and opens access to harder rivers. We generally recommend developing basic boat control and river skills first (makes rolling easier to learn), then adding rolling before progressing to Class III+.
