Frequently Asked Questions
Before You GoAbsolutely! Most of our whitewater students start as complete beginners. We build skills progressively, starting with fundamentals in flatwater, moving to gentle current, and only progressing to rapids when you’re ready. Good instruction makes whitewater kayaking accessible to anyone with reasonable fitness, comfort in water, and willingness to learn. We’ll meet you exactly where you are and advance at a pace that feels challenging but never overwhelming.
That varies based on natural aptitude, prior paddle sports experience, and how much time you invest. Most students achieve basic competence on Class II rivers after 2–3 days of intensive instruction spread over several weeks. Becoming comfortable on Class III water typically requires a full season of regular paddling with occasional professional coaching. Developing advanced skills for Class IV+ takes years of dedicated practice. We’ll give you honest assessments and recommend appropriate progression timelines.
For touring kayaking, the youngest age is 6. For river kayaking, the youngest age is 8. We have had MANY kids enjoy the river at that age. Private family lessons offer the most flexibility for including younger or older students. Call us at (307) 733-2471 to discuss your specific situation.
You don’t need to be an athlete, but reasonable fitness helps you enjoy kayaking more and progress faster. Kayaking emphasizes technique over raw strength, and proper form matters far more than power. That said, you’ll be using your core, arms, and shoulders for extended periods. If you can hike a few miles comfortably, you likely have adequate fitness for introductory kayaking. More advanced whitewater requires greater endurance and strength.
Completely normal! We address this fear directly by teaching wet exits in controlled conditions first. You’ll practice getting out of the kayak calmly in a pool or very shallow, flatwater until it feels routine and non-threatening. Most students discover that wet exits are far less scary than imagined once they’ve done a few. We never force anyone into situations beyond their comfort zone, and progression happens when you’re ready.
We offer both! Group lessons (typically 3–6 students) provide good value and the camaraderie of learning with others. Private lessons offer completely customized instruction, faster progression, and scheduling flexibility. Many students start with group lessons for fundamentals, then book private instruction for specific skill development. Private lessons work especially well for families, couples, or anyone with specific goals or scheduling needs.
