Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Go

Different, not harder. Canoes require learning different strokes and techniques, particularly the J-stroke for directional control. They’re less initially intuitive than kayaks but equally rewarding once proper technique develops. Canoes excel at carrying gear, offer more versatility, and provide unique pleasures including tandem paddling with partners.

You can absolutely learn solo canoeing! While it’s more challenging than tandem (you’re responsible for all steering and power), proper instruction makes it accessible to beginners. We typically recommend starting with tandem basics, then progressing to solo once you understand fundamental strokes and boat dynamics.

Canoes often work better for families with younger children, with more stable platforms, space for kids who are too small to paddle effectively, capacity for gear and snacks, and easier entry/exit. Parents can paddle tandem while kids ride safely in the middle. As kids grow and develop skills, they can progress to paddling positions.
