Frequently Asked Questions
Before You GoRiver SUP adds current, uneven water surfaces, obstacles to navigate around, and the need to read water constantly while maintaining balance. Techniques differ. Stance widens, paddle strokes adapt, positioning becomes strategic. It’s more challenging but also more engaging and exciting. Think of it as the difference between walking on flat ground versus hiking on uneven mountain terrain.
It involves risks like any river sport, but proper instruction, appropriate progression, and good equipment management make it reasonably safe. You will fall. It’s part of learning. The key is developing skills systematically, understanding river dynamics, using proper safety equipment, and making sound decisions about which water matches your ability. We prioritize safe progression throughout.
Completely normal! We address this directly by teaching proper falling techniques and self-rescue in very gentle conditions first. You’ll practice intentional falls, learn to swim defensively, understand how to recover your board, and develop confidence before tackling more challenging water. Most students discover falling is far less scary than imagined once they’ve done it in controlled situations.
