Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Go

It depends on what you’re seeking! Slide Lake offers beginner-friendly conditions with unique geology and excellent wildlife viewing, perfect for first-timers or families. Slide Lake sits in the Gros Ventre Mountains and was created by the massive 1925 landslide, with the slide path still visible today. Yellowstone Lake is for those wanting a full-day adventure in one of the world’s most unique paddling environments with geothermal features. At 7,733 feet, it’s the largest lake above 7,000 feet in North America, and full-day trips include the roughly 1.5-hour drive from Jackson. For the most iconic Teton scenery, our 2–4-day Jackson Lake overnight expeditions let you wake up beneath the peaks at exclusive backcountry campsites. Call us at (307) 733-2471 and we’ll help you choose based on your interests, experience level, and schedule.

We go rain or shine! Mountain lakes can experience afternoon winds, which we monitor closely. We typically schedule lake trips for morning departures when conditions are optimal. Our touring kayaks are designed to handle moderate wind and waves safely, and we have multiple great paddling locations to choose from regardless of conditions. We provide appropriate gear to keep you comfortable, and your safety and enjoyment are always our priority.

Lake shorelines provide excellent wildlife habitat. Moose frequent willow thickets along the banks, especially at Slide Lake and Yellowstone Lake. You’ll commonly see bald eagles, osprey, pelicans, and various waterfowl. Beavers and otters are active in morning and evening. Yellowstone Lake offers chances to spot bison, elk, and even grizzly bears along distant shorelines. The quiet nature of kayaking lets you approach wildlife more closely than hikers can (while maintaining safe, respectful distances).
