The Slide Lake Experience

Wyoming’s Hidden Gem

Your lesson begins on land where instructors cover the basics of board and paddle design, how to properly hold your paddle, and board paddling positions. This foundation ensures you understand equipment before hitting the water.

Once on the lake, instructors guide you through balance progressions: lying on your board, kneeling, and finally standing up. Within each position, you’ll learn different paddling techniques and paddle strokes to help you maneuver your board efficiently and effectively.

Slide Lake provides forgiving conditions perfect for learning, with no crowds, no motorboats, and beautiful alpine scenery. Just the right setting to focus on fundamentals and build confidence at your own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Go

Almost certainly! Most people stand and paddle within 15–30 minutes with proper instruction. We start with lying and kneeling positions to build balance foundations before progressing to standing. Yes, you’ll probably fall a few times (part of learning and usually fun), but you’ll leave paddling confidently and ready to explore independently.

Slide Lake offers several advantages for learning: typically calmer conditions with less wind, no motorboat traffic, less crowded than park lakes, fascinating natural history from the 1925 landslide, and excellent wildlife viewing. It’s a local secret providing authentic Wyoming experiences without tourist crowds. Plus, the Gros Ventre Mountain scenery is spectacular!

Half-day (4.5 hours) covers fundamentals thoroughly: stance, balance, paddle strokes, turning, safety, plus time exploring Slide Lake’s unique features. It’s sufficient for most beginners to gain competence. Full-day (8 hours) allows extended practice, technique refinement, more exploration, and potentially introducing advanced concepts. Choose based on your learning goals, endurance, and how much time you want on the water.
