Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Go

Level 4 is a swiftwater rescue course: you’re learning swiftwater rescue skills for personal use and professional development, This course gets into a higher level technical rescue regarding mechanical advantages and pins. Level 3 is a river rescue course: you’re learning simple rescue techniques; swimming, wading and throw bagging.

No prerequisites for Level 4. However, solid paddling experience and comfort in whitewater is highly recommended. This is intensive, physically demanding training best suited for competent paddlers.

Very. Both courses involve extensive time in cold water, swimming in current, practicing rope rescues, and performing physically demanding techniques repeatedly. Good fitness, comfort in whitewater, and willingness to work hard are essential.

The ACA maintains high standards for instructor certification. Many paddlers excel at rescue skills but struggle with teaching methodology, including breaking down skills, providing effective feedback, and managing student safety. This course is often paddlers’ first exposure to formal instruction techniques. Candidates who don’t achieve certification can retake portions or the entire exam.

All courses involve significant cold water immersion. We offer 50% off drysuit rentals to participants. Late spring and summer courses (June–August) have warmer water temperatures but are still cold at altitude. Proper thermal protection is mandatory year-round.

Drysuits available at 50% discount for course participants. Other specialized rescue gear (throw bags, carabiners, webbing, prusiks) should be purchased. These are essential items paddlers should own. Visit our retail shop for gear needs.

If courses overbook, we may schedule additional dates. Contact us to express interest and we’ll notify you if additional courses open.

Organizations or groups can schedule custom Level 3 or Level 4 courses on preferred dates. Minimum group size typically 4–6 participants. Custom scheduling allows focused training for guide staff, outdoor programs, or clubs. Contact us to discuss options.

Absolutely. ACA Swiftwater Rescue certification is increasingly required or strongly preferred by professional guiding operations, outdoor programs, and paddlesports organizations. It demonstrates commitment to safety and professional development.

The American Canoe Association is the nation’s leading paddlesports education organization, setting industry standards for instruction and safety. ACA certification is widely recognized and respected throughout the outdoor recreation industry.

Swiftwater rescue principles apply across all river-based activities: kayaking, rafting, canoeing, stand up paddleboarding, and even fishing or swimming in current. The skills are universally applicable to anyone spending time around moving water.
