Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Go

Risk management is our top priority. Our guides are American Canoe Association certified and trained in Wilderness First Aid and Swift Water Rescue. We conduct thorough safety briefings, provide comprehensive instruction, choose routes appropriate to current conditions, and maintain clear communication throughout the trip. While we can't guarantee absolute safety (no outdoor activity can), we employ extensive risk management practices developed over four decades of operation to minimize hazards

Our inflatable kayaks are very stable, and flipping is uncommon - but it can happen and is often part of the fun! If you do flip, the Snake River is deep and forgiving in most places. We'll teach you how to properly exit and re-enter your boat, and your guide will be right there to assist. Many guests who flip say it was their favorite part of the day

You don't need to be an athlete, but a basic level of fitness helps. You'll be actively paddling for approximately 1.5-2.5 hours with periodic rest breaks. The most important requirements are a positive attitude, willingness to follow instructions, and the ability to swim. If you can walk a few miles and have reasonable upper body mobility, you'll do great

In a raft, you're a passenger - maybe paddling occasionally but mostly just holding on. In a ducky, you're the pilot! You'll feel every wave and rapid more intimately, have freedom to maneuver (within boundaries set by your guide), and develop actual paddling skills rather than just experiencing the river passively. It's more engaging, more challenging, and ultimately more rewarding

We paddle rain or shine! In fact, rainy days often mean fewer crowds on the river. We provide appropriate gear (drysuits, wetsuits, splash jackets) to keep you comfortable in varying conditions. Trips operate rain or shine.

Absolutely! Bring a waterproof phone case or camera. We also have waterproof bags available. There are professional photographers at certain points on the Snake River who capture action shots, and your guide may take photos as well. Just make sure anything you bring can handle getting wet

Children must be at least 8 years old to participate in group trips, and must paddle tandem with an adult. Age requirements may be adjusted during high water periods. For private trips, we can sometimes accommodate younger children (age 7+) when water levels are lower and conditions are calmer

Absolutely! Many solo travelers join our group trips. You'll either paddle tandem with another solo traveler or paddle a single kayak. It's a great way to meet other adventurers and share the experience

Please refer to our cancellation policy during booking. We recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment in case of illness or unforeseen circumstances

For groups larger than 12 people, we recommend booking a private trip where we can dedicate multiple guides and customize the experience for your group. Contact us directly at info@jacksonholekayak.com or call (307) 733-2471 to discuss options

We want to help get you on the water! If you don't see availability for what you want or you're trying to make a last-minute reservation, we may still be able to accommodate you. Please reach out to us at info@jacksonholekayak.com, call (307) 733-2471, or swing by our shop at 945 W. Broadway Ave
