Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Go

Not at all! We have super stable boards and most people are surprised by how quickly they get comfortable on a SUP. On flatwater, the majority of beginners are standing and paddling confidently within 10-15 minutes. We start with basic stance, paddle technique, and balance fundamentals, then let you progress at your own pace. Yes, you might fall in – it’s part of the learning process and often part of the fun – but you’ll be back up and paddling in no time.

SUP provides a surprisingly good workout, but it’s accessible to most fitness levels. You’re engaging your core, arms, and legs, but it doesn’t feel like intense exercise when you’re surrounded by mountain scenery. If you can walk a few miles comfortably and swim, you can SUP.

Yes, you should know how to swim. Falling off is a normal part of learning SUP, and even experienced paddlers take occasional swims. The good news: our boards are stable, you wear a PFD (life jacket), usually a wetsuit, and getting back on is straightforward once you learn the technique, which we teach before you launch. Most people fall less than they expect, but when it happens, just climb back on and keep paddling!

Beginners can enjoy the lake and more adventurous beginners can enjoy the river

We provide instruction, a stand-up paddleboard, a paddle, a PFD (life jacket), wetsuits, neoprene booties, and transportation. You should wear clothing you don’t mind getting wet – swimwear, board shorts, or quick-dry athletic wear (avoid cotton). Also bring sunscreen, sunglasses with a strap, a hat, and a change of clothes for after paddling. Always bring a water bottle.

Absolutely! SUP is remarkably inclusive. Kids as young as 8 (depending on size and comfort in water) often excel at SUP – their lower center of gravity can actually be an advantage. On the other end, we’ve taught many active seniors who love the low-impact nature and stability of SUP. We adjust locations and instruction style based on age and ability. Private trips offer the most flexibility for multi-generational groups.
